Late 80's or early 90's they move the vendors to People's Park (Taman Persisiran Ipoh or Ipoh Riverfront) this probably in line with Ipoh getting it city status in 1988. What a shame. it was a lively back alley, with medicine pedlar, tools seller and old junk sales abound.
People's Park is a dead place across the Kinta river on the old side of town, I only visited the place once or twice during it was there. Seems like it has lost its sheen with not many sellers and being slightly further from the main town area it's a dead spot of town. At the time the park has few hawker stalls which I recalled not that popular with the locals.
They further move "Belakang Loken" around, now its permanent place is at Lower Ground Super Kinta Departmental store building which operate daily with limited vendors and not as popular. The weekly lively Sunday morning fiasco which is called Memory Lane is where it is now at Horley Street and is a much popular place. This place is large with many vendors or all sort.
Bustling with business, it is an interesting place to visit, there are eating stall on the parking lot and many old junk seller peddling their stuff. This place is one of the oldest around in Malaysia, as I recall Belakang Loken exist even in the 60's. Too bad many Ipoh old timer had gone and I am not able to get more info from them.
As usual there are imitation pedlars spoiling the authenticity of the "Pasar Karat" tag of this place. Follows are photos of what available at the place and many more photos that I can't place due limited blog attachment.
There are also some interesting streets performer and characters as in the videos follows.
Thanks for visiting.
